Thomas Jefferson :: Biography Biographies Bio Jefferson Essays
Thomas Jefferson Jefferson was born at Shadwell, his father's home in Albemarle county, Va., on April 13, 1743. His father, Peter Jefferson, a man of legendary strength, was a successful planter and surveyor who gained minor title to fame as an explorer and mapmaker. His prominence in his own locality is attested by the fact that he served as a burgess and as county lieutenant. Jefferson later held the same offices. Through his mother, Jane Randolph, a member of one of the most famous Virginia families, Thomas was related to many of the most prominent people in Virginia. Besides being well born, Thomas Jefferson was well educated. In small private schools, notably that of James Maury, he was thoroughly grounded in the classics. He attended the College of William and Mary--completing the course in 1762--where Dr. William Small taught him mathematics and introduced him to science. He associated intimately with the liberal-minded Lt. Gov. Francis Fauquier, and read law (1762-1767) with George Wythe, the greatest law teacher of his generation in Virginia. Jefferson became unusually good at law. He was admitted to the bar in 1767 and practiced until 1774, when the courts were closed by the American Revolution. He was a successful lawyer, though professional income was only a supplement. He had inherited a considerable landed estate from his father, and doubled it by a happy marriage on Jan. 1, 1772, to Martha Wayles Skelton However, his father-in-law's estate imposed a burdensome debt on Jefferson. He began building Monticello before his marriage, but his mansion was not completed in its present form until a generation later. Jefferson's lifelong emphasis on local government grew directly from his own experience. He served as magistrate and as county lieutenant of Albemarle county. Elected to the House of Burgesses when he was 25, he served there from 1769 to 1774, showing himself to be an effective committeeman and skillful draftsman, though not an able speaker. The Revolutionary Era From the beginning of the struggle with the mother country, Jefferson stood with the more advanced Patriots, grounding his position on a wide knowledge of English history and political philosophy. His most notable early contribution to the cause of the Patriots was his powerful pamphlet A Summary View of the Rights of British America (made in 1774), originally written for presentation to the Virginia convention of that year. In this he emphasized natural rights, including that of emigration, and denied parliamentary authority over the colonies, recognizing no tie with the mother country except the king.

The Negative Effects of the Fashion Industry on Eating Disorders
ENG 150 18 October 2012 The Negative Effects of the Fashion Industry on Eating Disorders While itââ¬â¢s fashion week in London, the size ââ¬Å"zeroâ⬠models start to prepare for the big show by purging to be as thin as possible. Most models starve themselves in order to achieve the ââ¬Å"waifâ⬠, stick-thin figure; it becomes so addictive, almost like second nature that it further leads to serious eating disorders. From recent studies, todayââ¬â¢s model weighs about 23% less than the normal woman. Clearly, most models do not depict the average woman. Men and women all over the world follow the influences that the fashion industry provides. They believe that the fashion industry depicts on what society should be acknowledged as, picture-perfect thin. Most models look like they had descended from heaven, but in reality they live in a sad world where body image is what is considered beautiful and they would do just about anything to achieve it. Society is also taking a n ose dive into this self-deprecating environment, where it is definitely not healthy for a person to develop and thrive. As Naomi Hooke, anorexia survivor, acknowledges, ââ¬Å"Anorexia has often been perceived as a quest for model-like beauty . . many anorexics detest their bodies,â⬠she then further goes into detail how this industry became her downfall (3). These waifish models on the runway cause major damage in the well-being of many, as well as their own; they create body image complexes that haunt women forever. Yes, the fashion industry is well known for the classic thin models, although in the 1950ââ¬â¢s models symbolized the beauty of the average woman, full figured and all, but todayââ¬â¢s models should not depict to an individual on what they should be perceived to look like, yet it happens every day. When a victim of eating disorders views a model, they think, ââ¬Å"Why am I so fat? Why donââ¬â¢t I look like her? What do I need to do to look like that? â⠬ The confidence and the self-worth of these victims start to fall short, although some begin to find solutions to their problems. According to Paul Casciato, of Reuters. com, almost 9 out of 10 teenage girls said they feel pressured to be skinny by the fashion industry and media. A large contributing factor to this problem is that many people in the fashion world encourage the use of overly thin models in editorials and fashion shows. For example, as Kathryn Shattuck, What's On Today: [The Arts/Cultural Desk], mentions that Kelly Cutrone, world renowned fashion publicist, encourages, ââ¬Å"Clothes look better on thin people. The fabric hangs betterâ⬠(1). The fashion industryââ¬â¢s emphasis on being thin and its use of extremely underweight models in unacceptable. Many people would agree that the fashion industry plays the majority role in eating disorders, but Lisa Hilton, British Vogue writer, disagrees. Hilton argues, ââ¬Å"Its objective is selling clothes, and the co nsensus remains that in order to achieve this, models need to be thin . . Fashion is about fantasy, about impossibility, about, dare we say it, art. Most women canââ¬â¢t tell the differenceâ⬠(1). Hilton condescendingly continues to refute the criticisms that models are too thin and the fashion industry encourages eating disorders. More recently, Sports Illustrated model, Kate Upton whom is a size 4, is now considered a plus size model and deemed to be ââ¬Å"too curvyâ⬠. In the United States the ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠sized woman is between the size of 6 and 10. Most of us do not understand why some put themselves through so much anguish to satisfy these body image complexes.Back in the 1950ââ¬â¢s, models were absolutely glamorous, they were healthy and had meat on their bones. The average height of a model is 5ââ¬â¢10â⬠and weighs approximately 120 pounds whereas the average women with a height of 5ââ¬â¢10â⬠weigh about 145 pounds. This is a significa nt and disturbing difference. As Hooke emphasizes, ââ¬Å"Sufferers are often presumed to pore over the pages of glossy magazines and starve themselves in their aspirations to become glamorous, thinner-than-thin sex goddesses,â⬠she then concludes how the industry destroyed her life.Women give in and fall into temptation, but why? These ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠women are beautiful they way they are, but in fashion terms, they are considered morbidly obese in comparison. As Holly Brubach, New York Times Magazine journalist, argues, Models starve themselves the way football players take steroids, jeopardizing their health and longevity for celebrity and wealth. More surprising, perhaps, and certainly no less alarming, is it the realization that dieting as become so commonplace that the skeletons on the catwalk simply strike us as more expert than the rest of us (1). As Brucach further describes how the fashion industry and their models compel everyday women to give up meals, she also observes that the Internet provides sufferers starvation tips. Commonly called promote anorexia, or ââ¬Å"pro anasâ⬠. There are many blogs and forums that pro anas flock to for tips. One teenage girl professed, ââ¬Å"Splurged and had 7 grapes, I canââ¬â¢t believe it. I cannot eat tomorrow. Please send skinny thoughts my way! â⬠Another pro ana, calls herself MelancholyMiss states in forum Lard Ass Rant Time, ââ¬Å"Starting to feel that swimmy feeling in my head again . . . I'm trying to tell myself I need to eat a little something so I can have some energy. No, my hard work wonââ¬â¢t go to waste. Iââ¬â¢m spinning, spinning down into the depths of self loathing, misery, isolation. â⬠What these women go through on a day to day basis is just horrendous. Itââ¬â¢s truly sickening. What drives these sufferers is beyond most.Isabelle Caro, a French model and actress who became the international face of anorexia when she allowed her ravaged body to be photogra phed nude for an Italian advertising campaign to raise awareness about the disease. Italian fashion label, Nolita, had photographed Caro at 26 years old weighing only 59 pounds. When Caro was featured on an episode of Taboo on the National Geographic channel, she claimed that she tried getting help but in her line of work, it was not possible and that if she gained weight she would lose her job.Neil Katz of CBS News, describes the billboard as, ââ¬Å"[Her] face was emaciated, her arms and legs mere sticks, her teeth seemingly too large for her mouthâ⬠(2). In Katzââ¬â¢ article, Caro confirms, ââ¬Å"I decided to do it to warn girls about the danger of diets and of fashion commandmentsâ⬠(1). In 2006, she reached the weight of 52 pounds. She sank into a coma and after months of extensive care she reached weight of 93 pounds. Although the major effort put into changing her life around, she was still remained in crucial health. Her body could not handle the major back and forth transformation that her body failed and died. She died at only 28. In her memoir, The Little Girl Who Didnââ¬â¢t Want to Get Fat, her dying wish was to raise attention and eliminate anorexia and other eating disorders. There are numerous ways to change the fashion industryââ¬â¢s negative reputation. The Council of Fashion Designers of America has created the CDFA initiative, which is implementing certain designers and magazines to fix said problem. The CFDAââ¬â¢s ideas include offering models that have been identified as having an eating disorder to seek professional help and not be able to work without a medical consent. Other ideal solutions include supplying healthy foods during photo shoots and shows; also educate models about eating disorders. Although, these solutions seem ideal, but wonââ¬â¢t become obsolete. There must be harsher regulations where healthy women, of certain weight requirements, can become models. This industry must defend its reputation and e nd the horrible habit of girls starving themselves to look like unrealistic and photo-shopped

Free Essays on Rappaccinis Daughter
The Garden of Good and Evil (Rappacciniââ¬â¢s Daughter) Rappacciniââ¬â¢s daughter is a deeply symbolic story. It contains many references to mythology and other works. However, I would like to address the story of Rappacciniââ¬â¢s Daughter, the fable of Giovanni and Beatrice as an analogy of Adam and Eve. Also, another interpretation of the story is worth notice: three men and a woman. All three men have their purposes for and judgments of Beatrice. All three men project corruption on an innocent, and imbue her with evil that really does not exist within her. On the surface, the analogy to the Bible is clear: Rappaccini as God, Giovanni and Beatrice as Adam and Eve in the Garden, Baglioni as Satan, lurking around trying to act upon and influence the characters in the Garden. The tree of life and death, the eternal fountain of purity flowing. However, the parallels to the biblical Garden of Eden can also be determined as quite the opposite of their equivalents in the Bible. Instead of a tree of life; the shrub of death. Instead of the innocent companions; fearful accomplices. Instead of a benevolent God; a malevolent Father, his bent purposes imposed on the innocent and unsuspecting inhabitants of the Garden. The garden and its central highlight, the purple flowered shrub, resembling the Garden of Eden and the Tree of Life, are the central scheme around which the story revolves. The shrub is at once enticing and forbidding, beautiful yet dreadful. The same terms are applied to Beatrice, ââ¬Å"What is this being? Beautiful shall I call her, or inexpressibly terrible?â⬠(1753) In Giovanniââ¬â¢s dream, ââ¬Å"Flower and maiden were different, and yet the same, and fraught with some strange peril in either shape.â⬠(1750) The ruined fountain, with the water still gushing forth, lies in the background and is used by Beatrice to water the bush. Its ceaselessly flowing purity is used to nourish the venom... Free Essays on Rappaccini's Daughter Free Essays on Rappaccini's Daughter In Nathaniel Hawthorneââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Rappacciniââ¬â¢s Daughterâ⬠, Professor Pietro Baglioni characterizes Dr. Rappaccini as both a man and a scientist. There a passages that describes Baglioniââ¬â¢s opinion of Rappaccini on pages 52 and 53. Baglioni dislikes Rappaccini. He does not agree with his methods in science. Baglioni states ââ¬Å"the truth is, our worshipful Dr. Rappaccini has as much science as any member of the faculty-with perhaps one single exception-in Padua, or all Italy; but there are certain grave objections to his professional character.â⬠Baglioni seems to agree that the methods of Rappaccini are not what would be considered ethical. Baglioni also says that ââ¬Å"But as for Rappaccini, it is said of him-and I, who know that man well, can answer for its truth-that he cars infinitely more for science than for mankind.â⬠Obviously Baglioni has spent some time with the Dr. and does not car for him. He seems to disagree with Rappaccini in many if not all aspects of his life. Baglioniââ¬â¢s opinion is concreted on page 53, where Baglioni states ââ¬Å"He would sacrifice human life, his own among the rest, or whatever else was dearest to him, for the sake of adding so much as a grain of mustard seed to the great heap of his accumulated knowledge.â⬠Baglioni believes that Rappaccini is selfish and that he will do nothing but to further himself, and he will hurt anyone he needs to, even his own daughter.... Salem Witch Trials and Puritan Community Essay Example
Salem Witch Trials and Puritan Community Essay Example Salem Witch Trials and Puritan Community Paper Salem Witch Trials and Puritan Community Paper Arthur Miller, many lies have been made by the Puritan Community. The witch trials took place during the times of the Salem In Massachusetts. This was a time of much hypocrisy in the people of the town of Salem. The witch trials involved many people to lie about the devil and witchcraft, which also harmed others in many ways. The Puritans of Massachusetts were a religious faction. Miler involved the Intense dishonesty over the Puritan Community. The story began with the dancing of the girls In the forest. These girls were: Ball Williams, Tuba, and Betty Pearls. When the girls were seen they became scared and ran off. This Is what led to the uprising In the town. Many people believed anything they heard or saw. They believed In an unconditional election In which God has no obligation to save anyone, no matter how little the problem is. The Puritans use this during the witch trials in which they hanged many people that were innocent of witchcraft. These hangings happened because everyone believed everything the girls said and showed. People in the crowd seemed awe struck by the girls and their ability to view people as witches or not. These hangings produced hysteria in the townspeople. In the story because of the dancing of the girls the priests of the town, Hale and Paris believed that the girls called the devil upon their town. Many people are accused of witch craft because of the girls. Abigail instigated her problems by lying, in order to avoid punishment and to remain an accepted member of the community. Author Miller described that she has, an endless capacity for dissembling. (9) She started out by trying to convince her uncle, Reverend Paris that she never participated in any acts of witchcraft. She deed an excuse for Betty, her cousin, who was lying unconscious in bed. She explained to Proctor, Oh, posh! We were dancing in the woods last night, and my uncle leaped in on us. She took fright, is all. (22) Mary Warren suggested that they confess everything so that they will Just get whipped rather than hung. When Abigail heard this, she said, Oh, well be Abigail said this because she was planning on saying or doing everything In her power to stay alive. When the girls supposedly brought Satan upon their town the people got frightened and the only way to get rid of the demons In the town Is through several hangings. The girls was the link between the people they could see Satan and the people that followed his work. Through the stories the girls lied about what they saw this should not have happened. The girls took their tear out on the people of the town and they did not even realize it. Salem Witch Trials and Puritan Community By Abyssinian Puritan Community. Which directrion will Cloud Computing take us Essay
Which directrion will Cloud Computing take us - Essay Example One of the themes that have been captured in this section is the threat posed by cloud computing on programming. This study will explore how this happens. The research concludes with lessons for the future and recommendations based on findings in the field of cloud computing. Background Information. Cloud computing is the fastest growing part of Information Technology. It is regarded as the fifth generation of computing after the mainframe, personal computer, client-server computing, and the web. It confers tremendous benefits to customers and users (Bechtolsheim, 2008). Experts have estimated that by the year 2012, the size of cloud computing infrastructure market will rise to $42 billion, up from $billion in 2008 (Bechtolsheim, 2008). This trend is as a result of the high growth rate in cloud spending, six times faster than the traditional IT spending. Stanley, states that public cloud workloads are expected to increase at the rate of 50% in the next three years, twice as the market currently expects (2011). Cloud computing represents a different way to architecture and managing remote computing resources. Its simplicity is evident in that one just needs to open an account with a service provider to start building and providing application systems into a cloud. The increased connectivity and increasing amount of data has led many service providers to employ large infrastructures with dynamic load and access balancing. This explains the reason behind the rapid growth in cloud computing. Service provider have been handing out and reproducing data across servers on demand, thereby improving the utilization of resources. This has enabled web servers to offer accessibility across multiple servers and routes according to the traffic (Jefrey, K. and Lutz, 2010). Cloud computing is not a novelty. It dates back to the 1990s where the ability of active traffic switching to stabilize utilization and to indicate virtualization of telecoms infrastructure became in use. Other data centers employed methods to maintain scalability and reliability in order to ensure the availability o f their hosted data. In the recent times, multiple cloud domains have emerged which explains the reason behind the many definitions and meanings of cloud computing. There are expectations in the industry that cloud model will find further uptake in future as means to manage the infrastructure of providers and provide small units with the capacities of a larger communications beyond their means. Warr (2009) says that big companies have an advantage over smaller ones as they can afford to expand their own data centers, unlike their counterparts who have house their IT infrastructure in someone elseââ¬â¢s facility. cloud computing has enabled the development of coloration centers where multiple customers can locate network, server and storage assets, and connect to a wide range of telecommunications and other network service providers with minimum cost and complication (Warr, 2009) There exist various definitions and interpretations of cloud computing/cloud, hence one can only give a representative and not a comprehensive definition of the term (ELC, 2010). Lutz and Jeffrey define cloud as an elastic execution environment involving numerous stakeholders and providing a metered service at several granularities for a particular level of quality. Cloud computing is defined as the active provisioning of IT capabilities-ââ¬Ëhardware, software or servicesââ¬â¢- from third parties above a network-system (Warr,2009). ELS define it as an outsourcing of IT infrastructures via the internet. It saves the agony of maintaining hardware and software
